Miles Traveled: 4,260 approximately by air

What was your favorite moment of the trip?
Making it to the top of Machu Picchu Mountain after (what seemed like) never-ending stairs. What my friends who had been to Machu Picchu before failed to mention is that the hike up to Machu Picchu is all stairs. Steep stairs. So getting to the top after a couple of hours felt like a real success!

What was your favorite town and why?

Aguas Calientes, Peru. It is a small little mountain town near the base of Machu Picchu Mountain. The people were very nice, and beautiful mountains surrounded us.

What are two exciting things some may not know about traveling in South America?

  • Guinea pig is a delicacy. They serve it as the entire pig like you would see a fish. I did not have a chance to try it while I was down there.
  • You can find bears at the top of Machu Picchu Mountain! We saw a tiny bear at the very top of the mountain. He was begging everyone for food – he loved apples.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
Hiking the Inca Trail was amazing. While we only did a small part of it, the part we did was along beautiful cliffs in the middle of the jungle.

What was your favorite meal abroad?
Alpaca kabob. This was the first meal when I landed in Peru. I loved it so much that I ate alpaca almost every day for dinner.

Tell me about one person you met?

Our tour guide, Alex, was very friendly and spoke excellent English. He was born and raised in Cusco, Peru, and lived in Lima for a couple of years. He left his engineering job about nine years ago and started working for travel companies. We were the first all-girls group he has ever had! Lucky guy!

If you had to live in one of the places you visited, where would you choose?
Aguas Calientes, Peru. It was so beautiful, and I would be in great shape if I hiked Machu Picchu all the time!

What is the next stop on your bucket list?
Scotland! I made friends with a group of girls on tour who from the UK. My friend and I have already planned a trip to see them for New Years!

Macchu Picchu Traveler Tip:

If you are planning a trip to Macchu Picchu, I highly recommend doing the 4-day trek with Loki Travel. You not only get to experience the beautiful Andes Mountains, but you also get to do fun activities like mountain biking, zip lining, and whitewater rafting!
